Shopping. Yes, we are going there.

Updated: Mar 12, 2019

I love shopping. It cheers me up. When I am super tired and have no energy for anything, I could probably still find some energy for shopping (online only, duh). Baby clothes, gifts, kitchen stuff, furniture, it all feels great. But, I’ve learned that like so many other things that can creep into our lives to fill a void that I may not even know is there, it is harming me. Sometimes it harms me by numbing me from what I need to be thinking about. It is a way for me to escape my work, responsibilities, and reality. Or by wasting time that could be spent on something more life-giving. Or for goodness sake, wasting actual money. In my mind, it never really feels like that in the moment, though. It feels like I am SAVING money by using the time to buy during this sale, and SAVING time by doing it now so I won’t need to worry about my daughter’s summer wardrobe in the summer. I’ll buy a bunch of amazing items RIGHT NOW. It is obviously not all bad, and I still think it is one of my giftings 💁🏼‍♀️. But, I’m getting my heart in check. Using my time and money wisely are disciplines I am taking more seriously. And the numbing thing I mentioned earlier? That is where I am really not going to let shopping, one of my favorite things, get twisted into harming me. What is it that I am escaping? What is it that I don’t want to think about? My sister told me one time when we were in our early teens😊that sometimes when you open the refrigerator, don’t see anything we want and then realize you aren’t hungry, you were never looking for food. You are looking for something to fill a void, and our first reaction is to reach for a physical way to do that. . John 10:10 says “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Instead of filling the void with physical things, lean into the Lord, the only one who can bring fullness, wholeness, and peace. I’m challenging you to ask the same questions I am and to lean into the pain you are trying to numb so that the God of the Universe can make us whole.
